Rachel Lopez | Ceiling is Believing
“I’m still not sure what I was thinking on that summer afternoon in 2017 when I took my first selfie in the back of a black-and-yellow Mumbai taxi. All I knew was that the ceiling above me had no business looking so ridiculous: a chocolate brown background covered in tiny, floating multicoloured strawberries. I snapped the photo mostly for a laugh. I didn’t know then that it would be the first of over 600 selfies, or that I was about to start documenting an ongoing, moving exhibition that runs through the veins of Mumbai.” Rachel Lopez
A collection of 300 self-portraits by Rachel Lopez, all taken inside Mumbai’s iconic taxis. Each taxi ceiling becomes a backdrop: vibrant papayas, clustered grapes, intricate florals, and delicate filigree patterns. It’s a dazzling catalog of design and color. The book serves both as a study of these extraordinary patterns and an intimate glimpse into the rhythms of Rachel Lopez’s daily commute.
